The OSG 1114000 is a straight flute plug tap designed for cutting 5/8-18 UNF right-hand internal threads in a range of ferrous and non-ferrous materials. Built from high-speed steel with a bright/uncoated finish, this 4-flute tap provides consistent chip formation and accurate thread geometry in through-hole and shallow blind-hole applications. With an overall length of 3-13/16 inches and a thread length of 1-13/16 inches, it fits standard tap handles and machine tool holders sized for this thread class. The H2 thread limit ensures a close tolerance fit suitable for general-purpose fastener assemblies. Licensed machinists, toolroom mechanics, and maintenance professionals are the typical users of this tool.
This tap is suited for production and maintenance tapping operations in aluminum, cast aluminum, cast iron, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, and high-carbon steel. It performs in both hand tapping and machine tapping setups where straight flute geometry is appropriate, particularly in through-hole configurations where chip evacuation along the flute is sufficient. The plug chamfer provides a moderate lead-in, making it practical as a primary tap or as a follow-up to a taper tap when threading to near full depth.
Designed for use in standard tap handle chucks and machine tapping holders accepting the 0.48-inch shank diameter; compatible with materials including aluminum, cast aluminum, cast iron, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, and high-carbon steel per OSG Series 101 specifications.
Secure the workpiece before tapping and ensure the pilot hole is drilled to the correct tap drill size for 5/8-18 UNF threads per standard drill charts. Apply appropriate cutting fluid for the workpiece material to reduce heat and extend tool life. When machine tapping, verify spindle speed and feed rate are set for the material and tool diameter before engaging. Inspect the tap for wear or chipping before each use and replace if thread quality degrades.
