The OSG 1105612208 is a spiral point plug tap designed for threading 3/8-16 UNC right-hand internal threads in challenging workpiece materials. Built from powdered metal and coated with titanium carbonitride (TiCN), this tap delivers extended tool life in hard-to-machine alloys. The three-flute spiral point geometry pushes chips ahead of the cutting edge, making it well suited for through-hole tapping operations. It carries an H5 thread limit and a 2B class of fit, which aligns with standard commercial thread tolerances. Overall length is 2.937 inches with a thread length of 0.751 inches (1-1/4 inches nominal) and a shank diameter of 0.381 inches.
This tap is rated for use in hardened steel, stainless steel, high-nickel alloy, titanium, and alloy steel - materials that demand a high-performance substrate and an aggressive coating. It is appropriate for production machining environments, job shops, and maintenance applications where through-hole tapping in tough alloys is routine. The TiCN coating reduces friction and resists heat buildup, extending intervals between tool changes in high-cycle setups. It belongs to the OSG Series 312TI product family. Coolant-through capability is not included in this configuration.
Designed for through-hole tapping of 3/8-16 UNC right-hand threads in hardened steel, stainless steel, high-nickel alloy, titanium, and alloy steel workpieces. Suitable for use with standard 3/8-inch tap holders and CNC or manual tapping equipment accepting straight-shank taps.
This tap should be installed by a qualified machinist familiar with thread-cutting operations. Ensure the machine spindle and tap holder are properly aligned before beginning the tapping cycle to avoid tap breakage. Use appropriate cutting fluid or coolant for the workpiece material, particularly when threading stainless steel or high-nickel alloys. Inspect the tap for wear or chipping at regular intervals when running high-volume production cycles.
