The OSG 1105612108 is a spiral point plug tap designed for threading 3/8-16 UNC holes in tough materials including hardened steel, stainless steel, high-nickel alloys, titanium, and alloy steel. Built from powdered metal with a TiCN (Titanium Carbonitride) coating, this tap delivers superior wear resistance and heat dissipation compared to standard high-speed steel alternatives. The spiral point geometry pushes chips forward ahead of the cutting zone, making it well suited for through-hole tapping operations where chip evacuation is critical. It carries an H3 thread limit and a 3B class of fit for general-purpose precision threading.
This tap is intended for use in machining environments where difficult workpiece materials demand a more durable tooling solution. The TiCN coating provides a hard, low-friction surface that extends tool life when threading stainless steel, titanium, and nickel-based alloys - materials that are prone to work hardening and galling. This tap should be installed and operated by a qualified machinist familiar with tapping speeds, feeds, and cutting fluid selection for the target workpiece material. Always power down and lock out the machine before changing tooling. Use a suitable cutting fluid or tapping compound rated for the workpiece material - dry tapping is not recommended for stainless steel or titanium. Verify that the tap is properly aligned with the pilot hole before engaging the cut to prevent tap breakage.
