The OSG 1105611308 is a spiral point tap designed for threading 1/4-20 UNC holes in tough materials including hardened steel, stainless steel, high-nickel alloy, titanium, and alloy steel. Built from powdered metal with a TiCN coating, it handles demanding production environments where standard HSS taps wear prematurely. The plug chamfer provides a gradual thread lead for through-hole applications. With 3 flutes and a right-hand thread direction, the spiral point geometry pushes chips forward and out of the hole, keeping the cutting zone clear during the threading pass. Thread limit is H3 and class of fit is 3B. This tap suits machinists and toolroom techs working in job shop or production settings.
This tap is suited for through-hole tapping in materials that demand high wear resistance at the cutting edge. Typical applications include aerospace, automotive, and industrial fabrication work where stainless steel, titanium, and high-nickel alloys are common. The spiral point design makes it most effective when chips can exit forward through the bottom of the workpiece, as in through-hole operations on vertical mills, drill presses, and CNC machining centers. The TiCN coating extends tool life compared to uncoated taps when running at elevated speeds in abrasive or work-hardening materials.
Designed for 1/4-20 UNC through-hole tapping in hardened steel, stainless steel, high-nickel alloy, titanium, and alloy steel workpieces. Part of the OSG Series 312TI product line.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist following standard tapping procedures. Power down and lock out the machine before mounting or changing the tap in the holder. Use a tap holder with appropriate torque limiting to avoid breakage in hard materials. Verify cutting fluid compatibility with the workpiece material before beginning the tapping cycle, and confirm hole size meets the recommended tap drill diameter for 1/4-20 UNC at the desired class of fit.
