The OSG 1101701208 is a spiral point tap designed for cutting right-hand internal threads in a wide range of ferrous and non-ferrous materials. Built from vanadium high-speed steel (HSS-E) and finished with a TiCN (titanium carbonitride) coating, this tap delivers increased surface hardness and lubricity compared to uncoated HSS tooling. It cuts a 7/16-14 UNC thread to a 3B class of fit with an H3 thread limit, making it suitable for general-purpose fastener holes where standard tolerance is required. The plug chamfer — typically 3 to 5 lead threads — allows the tap to start easily in through-holes and is the most common choice for production threading operations performed by machinists and toolmakers.
This tap is suited for through-hole threading applications across a broad range of workpiece materials including aluminum, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, high-carbon steel, alloy steel, die steel, stainless steel, and cast iron. At 3.937 inches overall length with a 0.894-inch thread length, it fits standard tap holders and CNC rigid-tapping chucks used in machining centers and drill presses. The 3-flute design pushes chips forward ahead of the cut, keeping the flutes clear in through-hole applications and supporting higher feed rates in production environments.
Designed for use in standard tap holders, floating tap chucks, and rigid-tapping collet chucks accepting a 0.323-inch shank diameter. Compatible with through-hole 7/16-14 UNC threading operations across the listed material applications: aluminum, hardened steel, stainless steel, high-carbon steel, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, alloy steel, die steel, and cast iron.
Secure the workpiece and ensure the tap holder is properly aligned with the pilot hole before threading — misalignment is the leading cause of tap breakage. Power down the machine and follow lockout/tagout procedures before changing tooling. Apply appropriate cutting fluid for the workpiece material; stainless steel and alloy steel require a sulfurized or chlorinated tapping fluid, while aluminum benefits from a light cutting oil. Follow shop-standard speeds and feeds for the material and tap diameter — do not exceed recommended RPM for HSS tooling in harder materials.
