The OSG 1101701108 is a spiral point tap designed to cut 3/8-24 UNF threads in through-hole applications. Built from vanadium high speed steel (HSS-E) and finished with a titanium carbonitride (TiCN) coating, this tap delivers increased surface hardness and lubricity compared to uncoated HSS tooling. The 3-flute, plug chamfer design pushes chips forward ahead of the cutting zone, making it well suited for production tapping in through holes. It carries an H3 thread limit and a 3B class of fit, targeting close-tolerance fastener threads common in mechanical assemblies. Overall length is 3.937 inches with a thread length of 0.76 inches and a shank diameter of 0.381 inches.
This tap is intended for use in machine tapping operations on CNC machining centers, drill presses, or tapping heads where consistent thread quality and chip evacuation are required. The TiCN coating and HSS-E substrate make it suitable for a broad range of workpiece materials including aluminum, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, high-carbon steel, alloy steel, die steel, stainless steel, and cast iron. Right-hand thread direction and no coolant-through construction keep the setup straightforward for standard production environments.
Designed for through-hole tapping in aluminum, hardened steel, stainless steel, high-carbon steel, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, alloy steel, die steel, and cast iron workpieces requiring 3/8-24 UNF threads to a 3B class of fit.
Machinists and toolmakers should secure this tap in a proper tap holder or floating tap adapter sized for the 0.381-inch shank before use. Confirm spindle speed and feed rate are appropriate for the workpiece material and tap diameter before engaging the cut. Use cutting fluid or tapping compound compatible with the workpiece material to extend tool life and maintain thread quality. Never reverse-drive a tap by hand to break chips in a through-hole application — allow the spiral point geometry to evacuate chips naturally in the forward direction.
