The OSG 1101700808 is a spiral point tap designed for threading 5/16-18 UNC holes in a wide range of metallic materials. Built from vanadium high speed steel (HSS-E) and finished with a TiCN coating, this plug-style tap delivers extended tool life in demanding production and repair environments. The spiral point geometry pushes chips ahead of the cutting action, making it well suited to through-hole tapping operations. With a 3B class of fit and H3 thread limit, it produces consistent, close-tolerance threads that meet standard UNC specifications. Machinists, tool-and-die workers, and maintenance technicians rely on this tap for both machine and hand tapping applications.
The 1101700808 is used in through-hole tapping of 5/16-18 UNC threads across a broad spectrum of materials including aluminum, low-, medium-, and high-carbon steel, alloy steel, die steel, stainless steel, hardened steel, and cast iron. The plug chamfer (approximately 3 to 5 thread lead) makes it the standard choice for most general tapping where a through hole is available to receive the displaced chips. It fits standard tap holders and is compatible with both CNC tapping cycles and hand-tapping setups.
Designed for through-hole tapping of 5/16-18 UNC threads in aluminum, hardened steel, stainless steel, high-carbon steel, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, alloy steel, die steel, and cast iron. Part of OSG Series 11017.
Install in a standard tap holder sized for the shank diameter before use; verify spindle speed and feed rate match the material being tapped. Power down or disengage the spindle completely before loading or removing the tap. Use an appropriate cutting fluid or tapping compound for the material being threaded to maximize coating life and cut quality. Inspect the tap for chipping or wear before each use, as a damaged spiral point tap can produce out-of-tolerance threads or break off in the workpiece.
