The OSG 1101700108 is a spiral point tap designed for cutting 4-40 UNC internal threads in a wide range of ferrous and non-ferrous materials. Built from Vanadium High Speed Steel (HSS-E) and finished with a Titanium Carbonitride (TiCN) coating, this tap delivers improved wear resistance and extended tool life compared to uncoated HSS taps. It features a plug chamfer for general-purpose through-hole tapping and a 2-flute spiral point geometry that pushes chips forward, keeping the flutes clear during the cut. The H2 thread limit provides a close tolerance fit suited to 2B class of fit applications. Overall length is 2.25 inches with a thread length of 0.33 inches and a shank diameter of 0.141 inches. Machinists, tool-and-die makers, and maintenance technicians performing precision thread work are the primary users.
This tap is intended for right-hand thread cutting in through-hole applications at the 4-40 UNC size. It performs across a broad material range including aluminum, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, high-carbon steel, alloy steel, die steel, stainless steel, and cast iron. The TiCN coating makes it a practical choice in production environments where tool life and heat resistance matter. Coolant-through capability is not included in this design, so conventional flood or mist coolant delivery is appropriate. The compact 4-40 size and 2-flute geometry suit both CNC tapping cycles and hand-tapping operations in tight workpiece features.

Tapping operations should be performed by a qualified machinist or maintenance technician following standard shop safety procedures. Ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and the spindle or tap handle is properly aligned before engaging the tap. Apply appropriate cutting fluid for the workpiece material to maintain tool life and thread quality. Inspect the tap for chipping or wear before each use, particularly when working in stainless steel or hardened alloy steels.
