The OSG 1100000 is a straight flute tap designed for cutting internal threads in a wide range of metallic workpieces. Sized at 1/4-20 UNC with a taper chamfer, this tap features 4 flutes ground from high-speed steel (HSS) with a bright, uncoated finish. The taper chamfer distributes cutting forces gradually across the leading threads, making it well suited for through-hole and entry-level thread starting applications. With an overall length of 2.5 inches and a thread length of approximately 0.75 inches, it fits standard tap wrenches and drill press tap holders used in machine shop and field service environments. An H1 thread limit ensures close tolerances on finished threads.
This tap is intended for right-hand threading operations in materials including aluminum, cast aluminum, cast iron, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, and high-carbon steel. It is used in general machining, maintenance and repair, and fabrication settings where 1/4-20 UNC threaded holes are required. The straight flute geometry works best in shorter-chipping materials. This is a Series 101 tap appropriate for both manual tapping with a tap wrench and machine tapping at low speeds.
Compatible with materials including aluminum, cast aluminum, cast iron, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, and high-carbon steel. Fits standard 1/4-inch tap holders, tap wrenches, and machine tap adapters accepting the corresponding square drive shank.
Tapping should be performed by a machinist or qualified technician familiar with thread-cutting operations. Always secure the workpiece and ensure proper alignment between the tap and pilot hole before applying torque. Apply an appropriate cutting fluid for the workpiece material to reduce heat and extend tap life. Back the tap off periodically to break chips and clear flutes, and never force a tap against resistance to avoid breakage.
