The OSG 10900500 is a spiral flute STI (Screw Thread Insert) tap designed for cutting metric coarse threads in blind and through holes. It features a 3-flute, 50-degree helix geometry that efficiently evacuates chips upward out of the hole, reducing the risk of chip packing in confined spaces. The M5x0.80 thread size and semi-bottoming chamfer allow threading close to the bottom of blind holes without sacrificing thread quality. Built from high-speed steel with a bright finish, this tap suits moderate-speed tapping operations on ferrous and non-ferrous materials. It conforms to a 6H class of fit, making it appropriate for standard-tolerance metric insert thread applications. Licensed machinists, tool-and-die makers, and maintenance technicians are the typical users.
This tap is intended for producing M5x0.80 metric coarse STI threads, which are sized to accept Heli-Coil or equivalent screw thread inserts. Typical applications include thread repair on stripped or damaged holes, as well as new production work where insert-reinforced threads are specified. It performs in materials such as aluminum, mild steel, cast iron, and similar metals. The semi-bottoming chamfer makes it a practical choice when hole depth is limited and full thread engagement near the bottom is required. It belongs to OSG Series S109 and is produced as a right-hand flute, right-hand cut configuration.
Designed as an OEM-style STI tap for M5x0.80 metric coarse thread insert applications conforming to Series S109 specifications with a 6H class of fit. Verify insert system requirements before use to confirm this tap matches the intended insert series.
Installation is performed by licensed machinists or qualified maintenance technicians using a tapping machine, drill press, or hand tap wrench. Always power down and de-energize the machine spindle before mounting or removing the tap. Use appropriate cutting fluid for the workpiece material to extend tool life and maintain thread quality. Do not force the tap if resistance increases sharply — back off to clear chips before continuing.
