The OSG 1068400 is a straight flute tap designed for cutting internal 8-32 UNC threads in a range of ferrous and non-ferrous materials. Manufactured from high-speed steel (HSS) with a bright/uncoated finish, it features a plug chamfer for general-purpose through-hole and blind-hole tapping. With 2 flutes and a right-hand thread direction, this tap produces a 3B class of fit thread with an H2 thread limit. Overall length is 2.125 inches, and the thread length is 0.75 inches. Typically installed by machinists, maintenance mechanics, and tooling professionals in production and repair environments.
This tap is suited for tapping 8-32 UNC threads in aluminum, cast aluminum, cast iron, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, and high-carbon steel. The plug chamfer style - typically 3 to 5 chamfered threads - makes it appropriate for most standard tapping applications where the tap enters the workpiece gradually. It is well matched for both hand tapping and machine tapping setups on drill presses, CNC machining centers, and tapping heads where a straight flute geometry is preferred over a spiral design.

Power down and secure the workpiece before tapping. Use the correct tap drill size for 8-32 UNC threads to ensure proper thread engagement and avoid tap breakage. Apply appropriate cutting fluid for the workpiece material - especially when tapping steel - to extend tap life and improve thread finish. Inspect the tap for wear or chipping before each use; a damaged tap can produce out-of-tolerance threads or seize in the hole.
