The OSG 1005113208 is a straight flute machine tap designed for cutting 1/2-20 UNF internal threads in hardened steel and alloy steel. Built from powdered metal and coated with TiCN for enhanced wear resistance and heat tolerance, this tap handles demanding tapping applications where standard high-speed steel falls short. The modified bottoming chamfer allows threading closer to the bottom of blind holes than a standard plug or taper configuration. With 5 flutes and an H5 thread limit, it holds tight tolerances consistent with a 2B class of fit. Thread length is 1-21/32 inches and overall length is 3-3/8 inches. Intended for installation by machinists, toolroom technicians, and maintenance professionals working on precision threaded assemblies.
This tap is suited for production and maintenance machining environments where 1/2-20 UNF threads are required in hardened steel or alloy steel workpieces. The straight flute design is best applied in through-hole applications or short blind holes where chip evacuation can be managed. The modified bottoming chamfer provides flexibility when full thread depth near the bottom of a blind hole is required. It is compatible with standard tapping heads, CNC machining centers, and manual tapping fixtures capable of accepting the 0.367-inch shank diameter.
Designed for cutting 1/2-20 UNF right-hand internal threads in hardened steel and alloy steel. Part of the OSG Series 10051 straight flute tap line. Compatible with tapping holders and chucks accepting a 0.367-inch shank diameter.
Secure the workpiece before tapping and ensure the spindle or tapping head is properly aligned to prevent tap breakage. Use a cutting fluid or tapping compound appropriate for hardened or alloy steel to extend tool life and protect the TiCN coating. When tapping blind holes, confirm available thread depth before starting to avoid bottoming the tap under load. Inspect the tap for wear or chipping between uses, especially in high-hardness materials.
