The OSG 1005111808 is a straight flute machine tap designed for cutting internal threads in hardened steel and alloy steel workpieces. It features a 5/16-18 UNC thread form with a modified bottoming chamfer, making it suitable for threading holes that require minimal thread runout at the bottom. The tap is manufactured from powdered metal and coated with TiCN (Titanium Carbonitride) for improved wear resistance and tool life in demanding materials. With an H5 thread limit and a 2B class of fit, it produces threads within standard tolerance ranges for general mechanical assembly. Installation is performed by licensed machinists or tool-and-die professionals in production and maintenance environments.
This tap is intended for machine tapping applications in CNC machining centers, drill presses, and tapping machines where controlled feed and speed are maintained. It is well suited for threading hardened steel and alloy steel components in industrial, automotive, and general manufacturing settings. The modified bottoming chamfer allows the tap to cut threads close to the bottom of blind holes, making it a practical choice when full thread depth near the bottom of the bore is required. The right-hand thread direction is standard for the vast majority of fastener and assembly applications.
Rated for use in hardened steel and alloy steel. Part of OSG Series 10051. Designed as an OEM-style machine tap for standard 5/16-18 UNC threaded hole applications in production and maintenance machining environments.
This tap is installed and operated by machinists using a tapping machine, CNC machining center, or drill press with a tapping attachment and synchronized feed. Always ensure the spindle speed and feed rate are matched to the material hardness and tap geometry before beginning the cut. Power down and lock out the machine before changing or inspecting the tap. Do not attempt to reverse a broken tap under power; follow standard tool-extraction procedures to avoid workpiece damage.
