The OATEY COMPANY 335321 is a self-nailing stud guard designed to protect pipes, cables, and wiring from fastener penetration through framing members. Measuring 1.5 inches wide by 3 inches tall and formed from 16-gauge steel, this nail plate installs directly over framing studs and joists wherever plumbing or electrical lines run too close to the face of the wood. Each package contains 25 individual guards. Licensed plumbers and electricians rely on these plates during rough-in to meet code requirements that mandate mechanical protection when a pipe or wire is within 1.25 inches of the framing surface.
This stud guard is used in residential and light commercial framing applications. It is most commonly installed during plumbing rough-in to shield PEX, CPVC, or copper supply lines, and during electrical rough-in to protect NM cable or conduit runs. The self-nailing design allows the plate to be driven into the stud face without requiring a separate fastener, speeding up installation during high-volume framing work.
Designed as a standard nail plate for use with wood stud and joist framing in residential and light commercial construction where pipes or wiring require mechanical protection per applicable plumbing and electrical codes.
Nail plates are typically installed by licensed plumbers or electricians during the rough-in phase before drywall is hung. Position the plate over the framing member directly in front of the pipe or cable run and drive the integral nails flush using a hammer. Refer to the International Plumbing Code, International Fuel Gas Code, or NEC as applicable for minimum clearance and nail plate requirements in your jurisdiction. No pipe cutting or system shutdown is required for nail plate installation, but the overall water or electrical system should be inspected before walls are closed.
