The OATEY COMPANY 335161 is a self-nailing stud guard designed to protect pipes and wiring from fastener penetration through wall studs and plates. Made from 16-gauge steel, this guard plate mounts directly to wood framing and creates a hardened barrier in the stud cavity. Measuring 1.5 inches by 5 inches, it covers the critical zone where supply lines, drain lines, or electrical cables pass through framing members. Plumbers, pipefitters, and electricians install these guards as a standard code-compliance step before drywall is hung.
Stud guards of this type are used in residential and light commercial construction and remodel work wherever pipes or cables run through or near the face of a stud, joist, or plate. They are commonly installed on supply and drain lines in bathrooms, kitchens, and laundry areas, as well as on low-voltage and line-voltage wiring runs that pass close to the framing surface. The self-nailing design eliminates the need for a separate fastener, speeding installation during rough-in.
Designed as an OEM-style protection fitting for residential and light commercial plumbing and electrical rough-in applications where pipes or cables require nail plate protection per applicable code.
Install these nail plates after pipe or cable runs are complete and before drywall is applied. Position the plate centered over the pipe or cable at the stud face and drive the integral nails flush with a hammer. IPC and IFGC guidelines generally require nail plate protection wherever a pipe passes within a specified distance of the framing face — confirm local code requirements before rough-in inspection. No power shutoff is required for the plate installation itself, but all pressure testing and electrical energizing should follow applicable trade sequence.
