The NORTON 69957398019 is a coated abrasive belt designed for aggressive material removal in both wet and dry grinding applications. Part of the R980P series, it uses ceramic alumina as the abrasive material bonded to a heavy Y-weight polyester backing. The closed coat density keeps abrasive grains tightly packed across the belt face, maximizing cut rate and surface contact. At 60 grit, this belt falls in the coarse grade range, making it suited for fast stock removal, weld blending, and deburring on metal and other hard surfaces. Maintenance techs, fabricators, and metalworkers rely on belts like this for consistent performance on file belt machines and small portable sanders.
This belt measures 1/2 inch wide by 12 inches in overall length, fitting compact bench-top file belt sanders and handheld belt tools that accept that drive size. The Y-weight polyester backing provides high tensile strength and resistance to tearing under load, which is critical in metal grinding where edge contact and pressure spikes are common. The belt supports both wet and dry operation, giving the user flexibility to run with coolant for heat-sensitive workpieces or dry for standard shop grinding tasks. It is sold individually and is well suited for maintenance shops, fabrication facilities, and tool rooms.
Designed to fit compact file belt sanders and portable belt tools that accept a 1/2 inch by 12 inch abrasive belt. Verify drive and idler wheel dimensions on the sander before installation to confirm proper fit.
Installation is performed by maintenance personnel and metalworking trades familiar with abrasive belt equipment. Power down and disconnect the sander from its power source before changing belts. Confirm belt tracking direction by checking the arrow printed on the belt backing, as running the belt backward can cause delamination. Inspect the platen, idler, and drive wheel for wear before installing a fresh belt.
