The NORTON 66253220904 is a Type 5 recessed surface grinding wheel engineered for demanding material removal on ferrous metals and hard alloys. Built on a vitrified bond with a ceramic abrasive grain, this wheel delivers aggressive stock removal while maintaining form stability under heavy grinding loads. At 12 inches in diameter and 1-1/2 inches thick, with a 5-inch arbor hole and a one-side recess measuring 7-1/2 inches in diameter by 1/2 inch deep, it mounts to surface grinder spindles without adapter modification on compatible machines. Maximum operating speed is 2,710 RPM. The H hardness code places it in the soft range, allowing the wheel to release worn grains readily and expose fresh cutting edges, which is critical when working with heat-sensitive or hard-to-machine alloys.
This wheel is designed for use on surface grinders and cylindrical grinders in production and toolroom environments. It performs across a broad material range including 400 series stainless steel, hard carbon steels, tool steels, titanium, super alloys, cast iron, ductile iron, and gray iron. The coarse 46-grit structure makes it best suited for roughing operations and high-volume stock removal rather than finish grinding. The semi-friable ceramic grain self-sharpens under load, extending dress intervals on tough workpiece materials common in metalworking and tool and die shops.

Grinding wheel mounting must be performed by a qualified operator following ANSI B11.9 and OSHA 29 CFR 1910.215 guarding requirements. Always ring-test the wheel before mounting to check for cracks, and never exceed the maximum RPM rating stamped on the wheel or listed on the blotter. Shut down and lock out the grinder before changing wheels. Use matched flange sets and paper blotters as required; do not overtighten the arbor nut, as ceramic vitrified wheels are brittle and can crack under uneven clamping pressure.
