The NORTON 66253044456 is a Type 1 surface grinding wheel engineered for precision stock removal on soft carbon steels, tool steels, and super alloys. Built on NORTON's 38A series, it features white aluminum oxide abrasive grain bonded with a vitrified bond system. The wheel measures 8 inches in diameter, 1 inch thick, with a 1-1/4 inch arbor hole. At 60 grit and a medium (I) hardness grade, it delivers a balance of cut rate and surface finish suited to production and toolroom environments. Maximum operating speed is 3,600 RPM. Typical users include machinists, tool grinders, and grinding machine operators maintaining tight tolerances on ferrous and specialty alloy workpieces.
This wheel is designed for use on CNC cutting tool machines, cylindrical grinders, and surface grinders in both production and job-shop settings. The 38A aluminum oxide formulation is semi-friable, meaning the grain fractures under load to expose fresh cutting edges, sustaining consistent cutting action across the wheel's service life. It is well suited to finish grinding flat surfaces, shoulders, and profiles where dimensional accuracy and surface finish are critical. The non-porous, non-recessed Type 1 flat-wheel geometry fits standard surface grinder spindle setups without additional adapters in most applications.
Designed for use with surface grinders, cylindrical grinders, and CNC cutting tool machines. Material applications include soft carbon steels, tool steels, and super alloys as stated by the manufacturer.
Grinding wheel installation and dressing must be performed by a qualified machinist or grinding machine operator following ANSI B11.9 safety standards for grinding machines. Before mounting, inspect the wheel for cracks or chips using the ring test — do not install a damaged wheel. Power down and lock out the grinder before changing wheels. Ensure the wheel's maximum RPM rating meets or exceeds the machine spindle speed before operation, and use proper blotters and flanges as specified by the machine manufacturer.
