The NORTON 66253003301 is a Type 5 recessed surface grinding wheel built for aggressive stock removal on hard ferrous metals and specialty alloys. It measures 8 inches in diameter and 1 inch thick, with a 1-1/4 inch arbor hole and a one-side recess 3.25 inches in diameter by 0.5 inches deep. The wheel uses a ceramic (SG) abrasive grain in a vitrified bond, rated at J hardness with a coarse 46 grit. Maximum operating speed is 3,600 RPM. This wheel is intended for use by machinists and grinding specialists operating surface grinders or cylindrical grinders in production or toolroom environments.
This wheel is suited for surface and cylindrical grinding applications on 400 series stainless steel, hard carbon steels, tool steels, titanium, super alloys, cast iron, ductile iron, and gray iron. The ceramic grain is semi-friable, meaning it self-sharpens under load while maintaining consistent cut rate. The vitrified bond provides rigidity and open structure, making it effective on hard, heat-sensitive workpieces where cool cutting is critical. The Type 5 recessed profile accommodates flange and spindle clearance requirements common on production surface grinders.
Designed for use with surface grinders and cylindrical grinders. Suitable for material applications including 400 series stainless steel, hard carbon steels, tool steels, titanium, super alloys, cast iron, ductile iron, and gray iron. Series designation: 5SG Type 5.
Wheel mounting and dressing should be performed by a qualified machinist or grinding specialist following ANSI B7.1 safety standards for the use, care, and protection of abrasive wheels. Always power down and de-energize the grinder before mounting or removing any wheel. Inspect the wheel for cracks or chips before installation and perform a ring test per ANSI guidelines. Never exceed the rated maximum RPM of 3,600; verify spindle speed before operation. Use proper flanges and a blotter on each side of the wheel as required by the machine manufacturer.
