The NICHOLSON 39971N is a Swiss-pattern file designed for precision metalworking and finishing tasks. This regular pillar file features a double-cut tooth pattern at Cut 0, which is the coarsest grade in the Swiss-pattern classification, making it well suited for fast stock removal on softer metals and for deburring operations. The rectangular cross-section measures 0.69 inches wide and 0.21 inches thick, with an overall length of 10 inches. It includes a tang for use with a separate file handle. Licensed machinists, tool and die workers, and maintenance technicians typically reach for this file when working on close-tolerance components.
This file is appropriate for standard-precision metalworking applications in both shop and field environments. Typical use cases include filing flat surfaces, fitting keyways, and smoothing rectangular slots or grooves in ferrous and non-ferrous metals. The pillar shape, which is narrower in width relative to its thickness compared to a flat file, allows access to confined areas such as slots and shoulders without contacting adjacent surfaces. This SKU is sold as a single file per package.
Designed as a standard-fitment Swiss-pattern pillar file for use with any file handle sized for a 10-inch tang-style file.
Always seat the file securely in an appropriate handle before use to prevent tang injury. Inspect the file for cracks or missing teeth before each use and replace if damaged. Files should never be used without a handle, and they should never be struck with a hammer or used as a pry bar. This tool does not require electrical lockout, but workpieces should be firmly secured in a vise before filing.
