The NICHOLSON 39929N is an 8-inch American-pattern pillar file with a double cut and tang configuration. Pillar files are rectangular in cross-section with a narrow profile, making them well-suited for filing in slots, keyways, and other confined rectangular openings. This file measures 0.625 inches wide and 0.125 inches thick, giving it the slim geometry that defines the pillar pattern. The double-cut tooth pattern removes material efficiently and leaves a moderately smooth finish. A tang end is included for use with a separate file handle. Machinists, toolmakers, maintenance technicians, and metalworking tradespeople are the typical users.
This file is used in metalworking, maintenance, and fabrication applications where a narrow, rectangular cutting tool is needed to work inside slots, square openings, flat shoulders, or recessed surfaces. Its 8-inch length and slender 0.125-inch thickness allow access to areas that wider files cannot reach. Typical applications include fitting keyways, truing flat mating surfaces, cleaning up machined slots, and general bench filing on steel and other ferrous metals.
Designed as a standard American-pattern pillar file replacement suitable for use in general metalworking, maintenance, and fabrication applications requiring an 8-inch double-cut file.
File installation requires a separate handle fitted securely to the tang before use — operating a tang file without a handle is a recognized hand-injury hazard. Secure the workpiece in a vise before filing. File in the forward stroke only; lifting on the return stroke extends tooth life. Keep the file clean of filings with a file card to maintain cutting efficiency.
