A flat back and 3/8-inch stem diameter are standard features for fixture mounting.
This indicator is used in machine shops, tool rooms, and inspection departments where tight-tolerance verification is required. Mount the indicator by inserting the 3/8-inch stem into a compatible holder and tighten the clamp snugly without overtightening, which can distort the stem and affect accuracy. Zero the dial at a known reference surface before taking measurements. Avoid lateral loading on the spindle, as this can introduce measurement error and cause premature wear.
