The Minwax 14444 is a water-based Polycrylic protective finish in a clear semi-gloss sheen, designed to protect and beautify interior wood surfaces. This hard, crystal-clear topcoat dries fast, making it practical for multi-coat applications in a single workday. It carries very little odor compared to solvent-based finishes and cleans up with soap and water. Carpenters, finish contractors, and skilled DIYers apply it over bare wood, stained wood, and painted surfaces where a durable, non-yellowing protective film is required. The one-gallon container provides enough coverage for larger projects such as furniture, cabinetry, shelving, and trim work.
This finish is well suited for interior residential and light commercial applications. Its exceptional clarity makes it a preferred topcoat over light-colored woods and Minwax water-based wood stains, where an oil-based finish might impart an amber tint. Typical uses include hardwood floors (light-duty), furniture refinishing, built-in cabinetry, and interior millwork. It is not intended for exterior surfaces, horizontal surfaces subject to heavy wear without proper build coats, or surfaces previously finished with an oil-based product without proper preparation.
Formulated for use over light woods and Minwax water-based wood stains. Suitable as a clear protective topcoat over bare interior wood, sealed, or previously stained interior surfaces compatible with water-based finishes.
Application is typically performed by finish carpenters, cabinet installers, or experienced painters using a high-quality synthetic bristle brush, foam applicator, or sprayer. Ensure the substrate is clean, dry, and free of oil, wax, or silicone before application. Sand lightly between coats with fine-grit sandpaper and remove dust thoroughly. Work in a well-ventilated area and allow full cure time before placing the finished surface back into service.
