The MILWAUKEE TOOL 49-57-5292 is a straight flute tap designed to cut 3/8-18 NPT internal pipe threads in metal workpieces. It features a taper chamfer entry, which distributes cutting forces gradually across the leading threads to ease thread starting in through-hole and blind-hole applications. The 4-flute geometry provides stable chip clearance during hand or machine tapping operations. Built from high-carbon steel with a black oxide finish, it is suited for tapping ferrous metals and general-purpose threading work. Overall length is 3.25 inches and thread length is 0.375 inches. Thread direction is right hand with a 2B class of fit.
This tap is used by plumbers, pipefitters, HVAC technicians, and machinists when threading pipe ports, fittings, or manifold blocks to accept NPT-threaded pipe or fittings. The 3/8-18 NPT size is one of the most common pipe thread sizes encountered in residential and light commercial plumbing, gas, and hydronic systems. It is appropriate for use in manual tap handles or tapping machines when threading steel, cast iron, or similar ferrous materials at moderate cutting speeds.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement tap for use in standard 3/8-18 NPT tapping applications with compatible manual tap handles or tapping machines that accept straight shank taps.
Installation should be performed by a qualified tradesperson familiar with thread cutting practices and applicable codes such as IFGC or IPC where pipe threading is involved. Secure the workpiece firmly before tapping and use a proper cutting fluid for the material being threaded to extend tap life and improve thread quality. Apply consistent downward pressure while turning the tap in a right-hand direction, backing off periodically to break chips. Never force a tap through hard resistance, as tap breakage can damage the workpiece and require extraction.
