The MILWAUKEE TOOL 49-57-5107 is a straight flute hand tap designed for cutting 4-36 UNS internal threads in through-holes and blind holes where chip evacuation is straightforward. Built from high-carbon steel with a black oxide finish, it resists corrosion and reduces friction during the tapping operation. The plug chamfer — typically 3 to 5 threads of lead — makes it the standard choice for most general-purpose tapping work, sitting between a taper tap for starting and a bottoming tap for near-bottom thread completion. The 3-flute geometry provides good chip clearance in a variety of workpiece materials. At 2 inches overall length and 0.02 pounds, this tap is suited for benchtop and machine use on small-fastener applications.
This tap is used in applications requiring fine-pitch 4-36 UNS threads, a thread standard common in precision instruments, electronics hardware, and small mechanical assemblies. It is appropriate for residential shop work, light industrial production, and field repair situations where a replacement or new internal thread must be cut in steel, aluminum, brass, or similar machinable materials. Right-hand thread direction is standard. The 2B class of fit produces the tolerances required for most commercial and industrial fastener assemblies using standard 4-36 screws.
Designed as a standard straight flute hand tap for use with any tap wrench or tapping fixture accepting the corresponding shank size, suitable for cutting 4-36 UNS threads in machinable metals and plastics.
Tapping operations should be performed by a machinist or qualified technician using a properly aligned tap wrench or tapping head to avoid tap breakage in small-diameter applications. Always apply cutting fluid appropriate to the workpiece material before and during tapping. Back the tap off periodically to break and clear chips, especially in deeper holes. Secure the workpiece firmly before tapping to prevent movement that can misalign or snap the tap.
