The MILWAUKEE 48-89-2313 is a 1/4-inch cobalt twist drill bit engineered for hard metal applications where standard high-speed steel bits fail prematurely. The variable helix geometry transitions from an aggressive 35-degree helix angle down to 15 degrees, promoting rapid chip evacuation and limiting heat buildup at the cutting edge. A 135-degree split point tip provides a self-centering start, eliminating the need for a center punch on most surfaces and preventing bit walk during entry. This bit is suited for use by machinists, pipefitters, ironworkers, and any trade professional drilling through hard steels, stainless, or abrasive alloys.
The 48-89-2313 is designed for hard metal drilling tasks common in fabrication shops, mechanical rooms, and field service work. Applications include drilling through structural steel, angle iron, pipe, and similar ferrous materials. The cobalt construction handles the elevated temperatures generated when cutting hard alloys, making it a practical choice when work material or drilling conditions would quickly dull a standard black oxide or jobber-length HSS bit. It can also be used in general-purpose twist drilling applications across softer materials.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement and standard cobalt twist drill bit compatible with 3/8-inch and 1/2-inch keyed or keyless drill chucks used in corded drills, cordless drill drivers, and drill presses.
Installation and use should follow standard drill press and hand drill safety practices. Secure workpieces firmly before drilling to prevent rotation. Use cutting fluid or appropriate lubricant when drilling hard ferrous metals to extend bit life and reduce heat buildup. Inspect the cutting edge before each use and replace bits that show chipping or significant wear to maintain hole accuracy and prevent breakage.
