The MILWAUKEE 48-13-5500 is an alloy steel ship auger bit designed for drilling through clean and nail-embedded wood in demanding trade applications. The bit features a through-center cutting design that creates a solid striking point against nails, reducing deflection compared to ahead-of-center or behind-center designs. Wider flutes promote maximum chip removal in deep holes, and a polished, coated flute finish prevents material from sticking during drilling in sap- or glue-laden wood. The impact-rated shank is built to handle use with an impact wrench. Licensed electricians, plumbers, and general contractors reach for this bit when running Romex wire, PEX water lines, and hardware through structural lumber.
This ship auger bit is suited for residential and light commercial rough-in work. Typical applications include drilling through framing lumber, rim joists, and pier timbers when installing electrical wiring, PEX tubing, rebar, bolts, and rope. It performs in installations such as piers, playground equipment, and landscaping structures where nail encounters are frequent. The longer shaft length allows deeper drilling and overhead work without requiring a separate extension.
Designed for use with standard 7/16 inch hex-shank drill drivers, right-angle drills, and impact wrenches used in electrical, plumbing, and general construction rough-in applications.
Installation is typically performed by licensed electricians, plumbers, or carpenters during rough-in framing stages. Confirm the drill or impact tool chuck accepts a 7/16 inch hex shank before use. When drilling overhead or at depth, secure the workpiece and maintain firm control of the tool to prevent torque-related injury. Follow applicable NEC or IPC clearance requirements when boring holes for wire or pipe runs through structural members.
