The MERIT BRASS SWM687-24 is a 1-1/2-inch pipe union constructed from 316 stainless steel and rated to 150 psi. It connects via socket weld on both ends with a threaded center nut, allowing the union to be broken and reassembled without cutting pipe. The 316 stainless steel alloy provides strong resistance to chloride corrosion, making this fitting appropriate for corrosive fluid and chemical service environments. Plumbers and pipefitters install this union where future disassembly of a stainless steel pipe run is required. The fitting weighs 1.8 pounds and ships as a single unit.
This union is suited for industrial, commercial, and process piping systems where 316 stainless steel is specified for corrosion resistance. Common applications include chemical processing lines, marine plumbing, food and beverage service piping, and similar environments where standard carbon steel or 304 stainless would be insufficient. The socket weld design accommodates Schedule 40 or Schedule 80 pipe insertion before welding, providing a strong, leak-resistant joint at each end of the union assembly.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or new-installation union for 1-1/2-inch socket weld stainless steel pipe systems rated to 150 psi.
Installation requires a certified welder or licensed pipefitter for the socket weld connections; pipe ends must be cleaned, deburred, and properly gapped before welding per applicable code. Depressurize and drain the system completely before removing or installing any union. Consult applicable codes such as ASME B31.3 for process piping or ASME B31.1 for power piping when specifying pressure ratings and weld procedures. Do not overtighten the threaded union nut, as this can distort the seating surface and cause leaks.
