The MERIT BRASS 8040-550 is a Schedule 40 aluminum pipe nipple measuring 2.5 inches in diameter and 5.5 inches in length. Machined from 6061 aluminum alloy, it is threaded on both ends for direct installation into standard threaded fittings and pipe systems. This nipple is used in fluid, air, and low-pressure piping assemblies where corrosion resistance and light weight are priorities over ferrous materials. Plumbers, pipefitters, and mechanical contractors install this type of nipple as a close connector between threaded fittings, valves, and equipment ports. At 0.85 pounds, it is easy to handle and suitable for tight spaces where steel nipples would add unnecessary weight.
This nipple fits residential and light commercial piping applications where 6061 aluminum is the specified material, including compressed air lines, irrigation systems, and fluid transfer assemblies. Its Schedule 40 wall thickness meets standard pressure ratings for threaded pipe in these service conditions. It installs with standard pipe wrenches and thread sealant appropriate for aluminum and the service fluid.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or new-installation component for 2.5-inch Schedule 40 threaded aluminum piping systems.
Installation is performed by licensed plumbers or pipefitters following applicable IPC and ASME B31 piping codes. Shut off and depressurize the system fully before removing or installing threaded nipples. Use a thread sealant or PTFE tape rated for aluminum and compatible with the service fluid. Avoid over-tightening, as aluminum threads can gall or strip more readily than steel.
