The MERIT BRASS 6040-550 is a Schedule 40 stainless steel pipe nipple sized for 2-1/2 inch pipe, manufactured from Grade 316 and 316L stainless steel using a welded construction. This nipple is a short threaded pipe fitting used to connect two female-threaded fittings or valves within a piping system. The dual 316/316L designation indicates the fitting meets both standard and low-carbon chemistry requirements, making it suitable for applications where weld heat-affected zone corrosion is a concern. Plumbers, pipefitters, and mechanical contractors install this type of nipple in process, industrial, and commercial piping systems that demand high corrosion resistance.
This pipe nipple is well suited for use in corrosive fluid handling, chemical processing, marine plumbing, and food-service or sanitary piping systems where stainless steel is specified. Schedule 40 wall thickness supports standard working pressures for 2-1/2 inch stainless pipe. The welded construction is appropriate for low-to-moderate pressure service in both liquid and gas lines where threaded stainless fittings are permitted by the governing code.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or new-installation fitting for 2-1/2 inch Schedule 40 stainless steel piping systems using NPT threaded connections.
Installation should be performed by a licensed plumber or pipefitter in accordance with applicable mechanical and plumbing codes such as the IPC or ASME B31.3. Shut off and depressurize the line before removing or installing any threaded fitting. Apply an appropriate thread sealant rated for stainless steel and the service medium. Avoid over-torquing threaded stainless connections, as galling can occur; use proper anti-seize compound or PTFE tape as specified by the sealant manufacturer.
