The MERIT BRASS 01608-80 is a 90-degree short radius elbow designed for butt weld installation in industrial piping systems. Manufactured from 316L stainless steel, this fitting provides corrosion resistance suitable for demanding process, chemical, and mechanical service environments. The short radius design reduces the center-to-face dimension compared to a long radius elbow, making it the right choice where space is limited and a tighter directional change is required. At 5 inches and Schedule 10 wall thickness, this elbow is sized for larger-diameter low-to-medium pressure piping runs. Installation is performed by qualified pipe welders or certified pipefitters using standard butt weld procedures.
This elbow is used in commercial and industrial piping systems where stainless steel is specified for corrosion resistance, cleanliness, or code compliance. Typical applications include process piping, mechanical rooms, HVAC hydronic systems, and industrial fluid handling lines. The Schedule 10 wall thickness suits low-to-medium pressure service. Butt weld end connections require proper fit-up, tacking, and full-penetration welding per applicable weld procedure specifications. The 316L low-carbon grade minimizes carbide precipitation in the heat-affected zone, making it well suited for welded assemblies.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or new-installation fitting for Schedule 10 stainless steel butt weld piping systems using 5-inch nominal pipe size.
Installation must be performed by a qualified pipefitter or certified welder following applicable codes such as ASME B31.3 or B31.1 for process and power piping. Isolate and depressurize the piping system completely before cutting into any existing line. Proper fit-up, alignment, and tack welding are required before final full-penetration butt welds are made. Use appropriate purge gas backing when welding stainless steel to prevent oxidation on the inside weld surface.
