The MAGNAFLUX 01-3341-81 is a water-suspendible dry powder developer sold as ZP-5B Zyglo, designed for use in liquid penetrant inspection (LPI) procedures. Mixed with water, the white powder disperses into an opaque white suspension that creates a high-contrast background for detecting surface-open discontinuities. It is compatible with both Type 1 fluorescent penetrant inspection (FPI) and Type 2 visible dye penetrant systems. This product is listed on the QPL SAE AMS 2644 Qualified Products List, making it suitable for aerospace, industrial, and defense inspection programs. NDT technicians and quality-control inspectors are the primary users.
ZP-5B is applied during penetrant inspection workflows on metallic and non-metallic components including castings and forgings. At standard concentrations, it enhances fluorescent indications under UV light during Type 1 FPI testing. At higher concentrations, it forms an opaque white coating that serves as a visible background for Type 2 color-contrast dye penetrant inspections. It is well suited for detecting cracks, seams, and other surface-open defects. The product requires continuous agitation during use to maintain a uniform suspension, as the powder will settle on standing.
ZP-5B is qualified for use in penetrant inspection systems meeting QPL SAE AMS 2644, AMS 2647, ASTM E1417, ASTM E165, ASME, MIL-STD-2132, MIL-STD-271, Boeing BAC 5423 PSD 6-46 or 8-4, GE P3TF2, and AECL requirements. It functions as a complementary developer within Type 1 and Type 2 penetrant inspection systems.
ZP-5B is applied by qualified NDT Level II or Level III technicians following documented penetrant inspection procedures per applicable specifications such as ASTM E1417 or AMS 2644. Mix the powder with water at the recommended concentration and agitate continuously throughout use to prevent settling. Do not allow the suspension to stand unmixed, as uneven developer concentration will affect indication contrast and inspection reliability. Follow site safety protocols and applicable material safety data sheet guidance when handling and disposing of the mixed solution.
