The MADISON ELECTRIC MSBST250 is an old-work PVC molded ceiling box designed for retrofitting ceiling-mounted electrical devices in existing construction. The box integrates a built-in hole saw that cuts the correct-diameter opening in one pass, along with a center-mounted piercing drill bit that keeps the cut on location. Raised mounting rings with a center hole are molded into the back wall to support surface-mount installations on basement framing or attic studs. The unit is rated for fixtures up to 6 pounds and has a depth of 2.5 inches. Licensed electricians install this box as part of standard rough-in or retrofit work.
The MSBST250 is suited for residential old-work ceiling applications where cutting into finished drywall ceilings is required. Typical uses include mounting light fixtures and combination smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. The integrated hole saw eliminates the need for a separate coring tool, making it practical for single-trade or owner-assisted installations in occupied spaces. This box is not rated for use on lath and plaster walls and should not be installed in those substrates.
Designed as an OEM-style old-work replacement ceiling box for residential drywall ceiling installations supporting light fixtures and smoke or carbon monoxide detectors up to 6 pounds.
Installation is performed by a licensed electrician in accordance with NEC requirements for outlet box support and fill calculations. Turn off the branch circuit at the panel and verify the circuit is de-energized before cutting or wiring. A 9/16-inch driver bit is required to seat the box — do not substitute a different drive size, as this can damage the integrated mounting mechanism. This box is not approved for lath and plaster substrates; verify ceiling material before installation.
