The M.A. FORD. 40318750A is a solid carbide spotting drill designed to create precise center-start locations for follow-on drilling operations. With a 3/16 inch cutting diameter, a 120-degree point angle, and a 2 inch overall length, this single-ended tool delivers accurate spot indentations that guide twist drills and reduce walk on hard or slippery workpiece surfaces. The AlTiN coating improves heat resistance and extends tool life when running at elevated speeds. Right-hand cut geometry and a 21-degree helix angle promote clean chip evacuation. This drill is a general-purpose solution suited for machinists, tool-and-die workers, and CNC operators working in production and job-shop environments.
The 40318750A is used in general-purpose metal removal applications where hole-location accuracy is critical before drilling, countersinking, or tapping. Its 3/16 inch straight cylindrical shank seats directly in standard collets, drill chucks, or shrink-fit holders without modification. The 1 inch flute length and compact 2 inch overall length make it a practical choice for benchtop drill presses, vertical machining centers, and CNC turning centers where clearance is limited. It is suited for spotting operations in ferrous and non-ferrous materials.
Designed as a general-purpose spotting drill for use in standard collet and drill chuck toolholding systems on CNC machining centers, drill presses, and lathes with live tooling where a 3/16 inch straight shank is accepted.
Installation and setup should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC operator following applicable shop safety procedures. Secure the shank fully in the toolholder to the recommended grip depth before operation and verify runout with a dial indicator before cutting. Ensure spindle speed and feed rates are set in accordance with the workpiece material and machine capability. Do not use this tool for drilling to full depth; it is intended for spotting only.
