The M.A. FORD 22918500 is a solid carbide jobber-length drill bit engineered for high-performance drilling in non-ferrous metals and similar materials. It carries a No. 13 wire size designation with a decimal diameter of 0.1850 inches and an overall length of 2.75 inches. The 150-degree split point reduces walking and thrust at entry, while the three-flute parabolic geometry promotes aggressive chip evacuation. A web-thinned, tapered web configuration further lowers cutting resistance at the tip. The bright, uncoated finish preserves the as-ground carbide surface for maximum edge sharpness. This bit is sold individually and is designed for machinists, toolroom technicians, and production drilling applications where carbide rigidity is required.
This drill bit is suited for drilling non-ferrous metals — including aluminum, brass, copper, and similar alloys — where carbide hardness and edge retention outperform high-speed steel. The straight-cylindrical shank fits standard drill chucks and collet-style toolholders on CNC machining centers, drill presses, and manual mills. The 5xD flute-to-diameter ratio provides adequate flute length for moderate-depth holes, and the maximum drilling depth of 1.219 inches (1-7/32 inches) is appropriate for typical through-hole and blind-hole applications in this material family. Series 229 conforms to DIN 6537 L geometry standards.
Designed for use in CNC machining centers, drill presses, and manual milling machines equipped with standard chucks or collet toolholders accepting a 0.1850-inch straight-cylindrical shank. Primary workpiece material designation is non-ferrous metals (Material Code N, O) per the supplier specification. No coolant-through feature; external coolant or air blast is the appropriate delivery method.
Installation and use should be performed by qualified machinists or toolroom technicians familiar with carbide tooling. Secure the shank fully within the chuck or collet to the recommended grip depth before operation — carbide is brittle and susceptible to breakage under side-load or chatter caused by inadequate tool engagement. Do not exceed the maximum drilling depth of 1.219 inches without a peck-drilling cycle to clear chips. Inspect the cutting edges for chipping before each use; damaged carbide should be removed from service rather than reground without proper equipment.
