The M.A. FORD 20404690A is a solid carbide jobber-length drill bit ground to a 118-degree four-facet point with web thinning for fast, accurate entry. It carries an ALtima and Titanium Nitride (TiN) dual coating that extends tool life in abrasive and hard-material applications. The bit measures 3/64 inch (0.0469 inch decimal) in diameter with an overall length of 1.5 inches and a flute length of 0.75 inches. The straight-cylindrical shank fits standard drill chucks without an adapter. Right-hand spiral flutes in a regular helix evacuate chips efficiently at the small diameters where chip packing is a common cause of breakage. This is a general-purpose tooling item intended for machinists, tool-and-die makers, and maintenance technicians working with small-diameter holes.
The 20404690A is suited for drilling cast iron, steel, stainless steel, and non-ferrous metals. Its 5xD flute-to-diameter ratio and two-flute geometry make it appropriate for short, through-hole, and shallow-pocket drilling operations on manual mills, CNC machining centers, and benchtop drill presses. The solid carbide substrate combined with the ALtima and TiN coating makes it particularly effective in harder steels and stainless applications where high-speed steel tooling deflects or wears prematurely. No coolant-through capability is present, so external coolant or cutting fluid is recommended when drilling stainless steel or cast iron at higher feed rates.

Secure the straight-cylindrical shank in a drill chuck rated for the spindle speed appropriate to the workpiece material and bit diameter. Carbide tooling at small diameters is brittle - avoid side-loading, interrupted cuts without proper feed control, or re-chucking with debris in the collet. Apply cutting fluid or external coolant when drilling stainless steel or cast iron to manage heat buildup at the cutting edge. Inspect the point for chipping before each use; a chipped carbide edge at this diameter will cause immediate deflection or breakage.
