The M.A. FORD. 20403100 is a solid carbide jobber length drill bit designed for precision drilling in demanding materials. It carries a wire gauge size of 68, which corresponds to a decimal diameter of 0.0310 inches, and features a 118-degree faceted point angle for accurate entry and reduced walk. The bright, uncoated carbide construction delivers the hardness and rigidity needed when drilling cast iron, stainless steel, carbon steel, and non-ferrous metals. With a right-hand spiral flute and web-thinned, tapered web configuration, this bit clears chips efficiently and requires reduced thrust force at the cut. It fits into standard straight-shank chuck systems used by machinists and tool-and-die professionals.
This drill bit is built for general-purpose production and maintenance drilling where small-diameter precision holes are required. The 5xD flute-to-diameter ratio makes it suitable for through-holes and shallow blind holes in a range of workpiece materials including cast iron, stainless steel, carbon steel, and non-ferrous metals. The 1.5-inch overall length and 0.375-inch flute length position it for use in benchtop drill presses, CNC machining centers, and hand-held drilling applications where short-reach access is needed. It is sold individually and is well-suited for shops that require consistent small-run hole quality without coolant-through tooling.
Designed as a general-purpose replacement or stock drill bit for applications requiring wire gauge size 68 in solid carbide. Compatible with standard straight-shank chucks sized to accept a 0.0310-inch shank diameter. Suitable for primary workpiece materials coded K, M, N, and P - corresponding to cast iron, stainless steel, non-ferrous metals, and steel.
Installation is performed by machinists, CNC operators, or tool-room technicians using a drill press, machining center, or precision hand drill. Ensure the chuck is clean and fully tightened on the straight-cylindrical shank before operation to prevent runout at this small diameter. Coolant-through is not supported on this bit; use an appropriate cutting fluid applied externally when drilling stainless steel or cast iron to extend tool life. Do not exceed recommended feed and speed parameters for the workpiece material, as solid carbide is brittle and can fracture under lateral load or excessive feed force.
