The M.A. FORD 16401700 is a solid carbide square end mill designed for precision milling operations in demanding production environments. With a 0.017-inch cutting diameter and a 0.034-inch length of cut, this is a micro-geometry tool built for fine detail work, slot milling, and profiling at very small scales. The 1/8-inch straight-cylindrical shank and 1.5-inch overall length keep the tool rigid and manageable in standard collet holders. The two-flute, spiral-flute geometry with a 30-degree helix angle supports efficient chip evacuation in both ferrous and non-ferrous applications. This tool is installed and operated by machinists and toolroom technicians working on CNC machining centers and manual mills.
The 16401700 is suited for milling operations across a broad range of workpiece materials, including hardened steels, cast irons, stainless steels, non-ferrous metals, aluminum alloys, and high-temperature alloys, as indicated by the primary workpiece material codes H, K, M, N, P, and S. Its stub-length classification makes it appropriate for applications requiring maximum rigidity and minimal deflection at small diameters. The uncoated carbide substrate is well-suited for light-duty finishing passes and applications where coating compatibility or workpiece contamination is a concern.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement and production cutting tool within the M.A. FORD Series 164 square end mill line. Compatible with standard 1/8-inch collet holders and tool holders used on CNC machining centers and manual milling machines.
Installation and operation should be performed by qualified machinists or toolroom technicians familiar with micro-diameter end mill handling. Ensure the spindle and collet are free of debris and runout is verified before clamping, as even minor runout is amplified at 0.017-inch diameters and can cause immediate tool breakage. Power down and lock out the machine before seating or removing the tool. Follow machine manufacturer feed and speed guidelines for micro carbide tooling; do not exceed recommended parameters, as solid carbide micro end mills are brittle under side-load shock.
