The LUCAS-MILHAUPT 95168 is a copper-rich, phosphorus-bearing brazing filler metal sold under the Sil-Fos 15 product line. It is used to join copper tubing and copper fittings in HVAC refrigeration, plumbing, and related mechanical systems. The alloy measures 1/8 inch in diameter and 20 inches in length per rod. Its composition — 80% copper, 15% silver, and 5% phosphorus — gives it a self-fluxing action on clean copper surfaces, eliminating the need for separate flux in most copper-to-copper applications. Brazing temperature range is 1300 to 1500 degrees F. Licensed HVAC technicians and plumbers are the primary installers.
This filler metal is suited for copper-to-copper joints in residential and light commercial refrigeration piping, ACR tubing, and general plumbing. When joining copper-base alloys such as brass or bronze, the joint must be pre-fluxed with an appropriate brazing flux such as handy flux, because the self-fluxing property of the phosphorus content is effective on copper only. This alloy must not be used on nickel-base or iron-base alloys. Phosphorus reacts with nickel and iron to form brittle intermetallic compounds at the joint interface, which will compromise joint integrity.
Designed for copper-to-copper brazing in HVAC, refrigeration, and plumbing applications. Compatible with copper tubing and copper fittings. When used on copper-base alloys such as brass or bronze, flux must be applied. This alloy is not compatible with nickel-base or iron-base alloys.
Installation is performed by licensed HVAC technicians or plumbers using an oxy-acetylene or air-acetylene torch. Shut off all system pressure and recover any refrigerant charge before opening refrigerant circuits. Ensure the base metal surfaces are clean and free of oxidation before applying heat. Follow applicable mechanical codes, including IFGC and local plumbing codes, for brazed joint inspection and pressure testing requirements.
