The LEVITON TELCOM EV40P is a 40-amp plug-in Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE) unit designed for Level 2 EV charging applications. Operating at 40 amps, it delivers faster charge times compared to standard Level 1 equipment, making it a practical choice for residential garages and light commercial parking installations. The EV40P is a plug-in model, meaning it connects to an existing receptacle rather than requiring hardwired termination, which simplifies installation and allows for relocation if needed. Electricians and EV infrastructure installers are the primary trade professionals who deploy this unit.
The EV40P is suited for residential and light commercial settings where a dedicated 240-volt circuit with an appropriate receptacle is already in place. It provides a significant charging rate improvement over standard 120-volt Level 1 chargers, making it appropriate for daily EV users who need reliable overnight or daytime top-off capability. Its plug-in design accommodates installations where a hardwired unit is not preferred or where local code or lease agreements require a non-permanent setup.
Designed as a plug-in Level 2 EVSE compatible with electric vehicles that accept a standard SAE J1772 connector, which covers the majority of non-Tesla passenger EVs and plug-in hybrids sold in North America.
Installation should be performed by a licensed electrician in accordance with NEC Article 625, which governs electric vehicle charging system equipment. Before installation, confirm the supply circuit is properly rated for a 40-amp continuous load, which typically requires a 50-amp dedicated branch circuit breaker. Power down the circuit at the panel before connecting or disconnecting the unit. Verify the receptacle type and mounting location meet local authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) requirements prior to energizing the circuit.
