The KYOCERA TSB01661 is a cermet turning insert in the APBT series, designed for precision metal turning operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. Identified by ISO code ABW15R4015, this insert carries the TC60 manufacturer grade with an uncoated NbC cermet substrate. It features a positive rake geometry, a 15-degree relief angle, and a honed cutting edge style. The insert has a 0.15 mm corner radius, an insert length of 15.40 mm (0.6063 inches), and supports a maximum depth of cut of 4.20 mm (0.165 inches). With two available cutting edges and screw-type holding, it is suited for finish and semi-finish turning applications where tight tolerances and good surface finish are priorities.
This insert is intended for turning operations on steel and stainless steel workpieces, corresponding to ISO material codes P and M. It targets P10, P20, M10, and M20 material grade classifications. The right-hand cutting orientation and 45-degree lead angle make it appropriate for standard external turning and back turning applications in both production and job-shop environments. Licensed machinists and CNC operators working on ferrous workpiece materials will find this insert suited for light to medium stock removal passes where cermet substrate performance is preferred over coated carbide alternatives.
Designed for use in APBT series toolholders accepting the ABW insert style with an inscribed circle of 0.2760 inches, a 3.00 mm hole diameter, and 5/32 inch insert thickness. Conforms to ANSI and ISO standards for interchangeability with compatible toolholder systems. Industry standard number ABW15R4015TC60 may be used to cross-reference compatible holders.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC tooling technician. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and the tool turret is indexed to a safe position before handling or seating the insert. Use the appropriate torx or hex key to torque the clamping screw to the toolholder manufacturer's specification — do not over-tighten, as this can crack the cermet substrate. Verify insert seating and tool offset compensation in the CNC control before resuming cutting operations.
