The KYOCERA TLC10540 is a solid carbide grooving insert in the GD series, designed for precision grooving, parting, and turning operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. It carries the PR1535 grade with a MEGACOAT NANO PVD coating, which provides wear resistance and thermal stability during interrupted and continuous cuts. The insert has a neutral hand orientation, a 3.00 mm cutting width, and a maximum depth of cut of 25.50 mm, making it well suited for moderate-depth grooving work. A 0.40 mm corner radius and a positive rake angle of 2 degrees help reduce cutting forces on difficult-to-machine workpiece materials. This insert is installed by machinists and toolroom technicians using a clamp-style insert holding method.
The TLC10540 is rated by the manufacturer for primary use on superalloys and secondary use on stainless steel. These are high-strength, work-hardening materials that demand a tough, thermally stable coating and a sharp cutting geometry. The GM chip breaker geometry controls chip flow effectively in these materials. Typical applications include aerospace component grooving, medical part turning, and general precision machining in job shops or production environments where superalloy and stainless workpieces are common.
Designed for use in GD-series clamp-style grooving toolholders that accept GDM3020 insert geometry. ANSI code GDM3020N040GMPR1535 and ISO code GDM3020N-040GM identify compatible toolholder and insert pocket specifications.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist with the machine fully powered down and the spindle locked before changing inserts. Use the correct torque wrench and clamp screws specified by the toolholder manufacturer to seat the insert firmly without over-torquing the clamp. Inspect the insert pocket and clamp for chips or debris before seating the new insert. Handle carbide inserts carefully to avoid chipping the cutting edge prior to use.
