The KYOCERA TBZ05472 is a cubic boron nitride (CBN) turning insert designed for high-speed machining of hard and difficult-to-cut materials. It carries the industry standard designation VBGW221T00315ME and uses the KBN25M manufacturer grade with a MEGACOAT PVD coating applied to a micrograin CBN substrate. The insert features a 35-degree diamond shape with a neutral hand orientation, a 0.25 inch inscribed circle, a 1/64 inch (0.0156 inch) corner radius, and a 5-degree relief angle. With two cutting edges and a honed edge style, it delivers consistent performance in precision turning operations. Licensed machinists and CNC operators working in job shops, production facilities, or aerospace and automotive environments are the primary users.
This insert is suited for external turning, facing, profiling, copying, internal facing, back boring, and undercutting operations on hard materials. The primary workpiece material classification is H, covering hardened steels, hard cast irons, and similar hard-turning applications where CBN tooling is the standard choice over carbide. The ISOI series designation and compliance with both ANSI and ISO standards make it compatible with standard VBGW-style toolholders used across a wide range of CNC lathes and turning centers. It is sold individually and is suitable for multi-use applications across a range of part geometries.

Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC setup technician. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and the turret is locked out before seating or replacing the insert. Use the appropriate torx or hex key to secure the clamping screw to the toolholder manufacturers specified procedure without over-torquing the insert pocket. Inspect the toolholder pocket and seating surfaces for chips or debris before installing a new insert, as contamination in the pocket can cause premature edge failure or dimensional error.
