The KYOCERA TBZ02221 is a cubic boron nitride (CBN) indexable turning insert designed for high-speed, hard-material machining operations. Built to ISOI series standards under manufacturer grade KBN25M, this insert features a PVD-applied MEGACOAT finish that extends edge life in demanding interrupted and continuous cuts. The diamond 55-degree insert shape, neutral hand orientation, and chamfered-and-honed cutting edge combine to deliver stable, predictable performance on hardened steels and similarly difficult workpieces. With 2 cutting edges per insert and a multi-tipped construction, the TBZ02221 is suited for production-level use by skilled machinists and toolroom professionals.
This insert is intended for hard-material turning applications where conventional carbide tooling falls short. Typical use cases include finish and semi-finish turning of hardened steel components in automotive, aerospace, and general precision machining environments. Rated for boring, external turning, and copying operations, it fits into standard DNGA-style insert pockets. The 0.5-inch inscribed circle and 0.1875-inch insert thickness place it in a mid-range size class commonly used on CNC turning centers and engine lathes handling moderate to small diameter workpieces.
Designed for use in DNGA-style insert pockets with clamp and pin holding methods. Compatible with toolholders accepting a DNGA 432 insert form factor. Verify pocket geometry, insert thickness, and corner radius requirements against toolholder specifications before installation.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or toolroom technician with the machine spindle fully stopped and the machine locked out per facility safety procedures. Seat the insert firmly against all pocket contact surfaces and torque the clamp or pin to the toolholder manufacturer's specification before beginning a cut. Inspect the cutting edge for chips or wear at regular intervals, especially when machining interrupted surfaces. Dispose of worn CBN inserts according to applicable shop waste and sharps-handling protocols.
