The KYOCERA TBR05638 is a polycrystalline diamond (PCD) turning insert in the VBMT3302SE geometry, grade KPD001, designed for high-efficiency single-point turning operations. Built on a super micrograin substrate and left uncoated, this insert delivers sharp, consistent cutting action at a 10-degree positive rake angle with a honed cutting edge. The 35-degree diamond shape (Shape Code V) concentrates cutting forces for precision work in tight-tolerance applications. With a 0.375-inch inscribed circle and a 0.004-inch corner radius, it is suited to light finishing and semi-finishing passes. A licensed machinist or CNC operator installs it using a screw-holding method on compatible VBMT-style toolholders.
This insert is intended for turning non-ferrous metals and superalloys where PCD tooling is preferred over coated carbide. Typical applications include external turning, facing, copying, profiling, internal facing, back boring, and undercutting. The KPD001 grade is suited to interrupted-cut-tolerant, abrasion-resistant cutting scenarios on materials such as aluminum alloys, copper alloys, and aerospace superalloys. It conforms to ANSI and ISO standards and carries the ISO designation VBMT160401SE, making it cross-referenceable across major toolholder catalogs. Single-tipped construction means the insert is indexed once before replacement rather than rotated to multiple edges.
Designed as a direct-fit replacement for VBMT-style screw-clamp toolholders accepting a 3/8-inch inscribed circle insert per ANSI and ISO dimensional standards. Compatible with turning centers and CNC lathes configured for VBMT geometry tooling. Multi-use application support includes back boring, copying, external turning, facing, internal facing, profiling, and undercutting.
Installation is performed by a qualified machinist or CNC setup technician. Power down and lock out the machine before handling or indexing the insert. Seat the insert fully into the toolholder pocket and tighten the clamp screw to the toolholder manufacturer's specified torque — do not estimate by feel. Inspect the seating surface and pocket for chips or debris before securing, as contamination will affect insert orientation and surface finish.
