The KYOCERA OTM86416 is an indexable square-shoulder end mill designed for high-efficiency milling of aluminum and non-ferrous materials. Built around the EM-AL cutter style, it accepts APET 1604 insert style inserts secured by a screw-clamp holding method. The toolholder features a 1-inch Weldon flat shank and an overall length of 4 inches, with a 1.5-inch cutting diameter and a maximum depth of cut of 0.64 inches. Through-coolant capability directs fluid directly to the cutting zone, improving chip evacuation and extending insert life. With 2 flutes and a 90-degree lead angle, this tool produces true square shoulders in a single pass. Installation is performed by qualified machinists on CNC milling centers or manual knee mills.
The OTM86416 is suited for square-shoulder roughing and semi-finishing operations on aluminum and similar non-ferrous workpieces. The EM-AL cutter style is optimized for high metal removal rates in these materials. The Weldon flat shank provides positive rotational drive, making it appropriate for higher-feed applications where pullout resistance is critical. A usable length of 1.74 inches allows for moderate-depth shoulder and slot milling. This tool is typically used in job shops, production machining environments, and aerospace component work where clean, square walls and consistent surface finish are required.
Designed for use with APET 1604 series inserts. Compatible with machine spindles accepting a 1-inch Weldon flat shank. Verify that the machine tool has through-spindle coolant capability to utilize the through-coolant feature of this toolholder.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist following standard toolholder setup procedures. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and locked out before mounting or removing the toolholder. Secure the Weldon flat shank in a collet chuck or side-lock holder rated for the shank diameter; confirm set screw engagement against the flat. Inspect inserts for seating and screw torque before initiating a cut, following the insert manufacturer's recommended clamping procedure.
