The KLEIN TOOLS ET40 is an electronic AC/DC voltage tester designed for fast, non-meter voltage detection in residential and light commercial electrical work. It tests AC voltages from 12 volts to 240 volts across four levels aligned with common residential voltages, and DC voltages from 1.5 volts to greater than 17 to 24 volts across four DC-aligned levels. Bright LEDs indicate both the type and level of voltage detected. The ET40 also identifies positive and negative DC polarity, making it useful for low-voltage DC diagnostics as well as standard line-voltage AC checks. Licensed electricians and HVAC technicians are the primary users.
The ET40 is suited for residential service work, panel troubleshooting, fixture and outlet verification, and low-voltage DC circuit checks. The four AC levels align with commonly encountered residential voltages including 12, 24, 120, and 240-volt ranges, while the DC levels cover battery and control-circuit voltages. Its compact form and built-in lead holders on the sides of the tester make it practical for tool belt carry and single-hand operation on the job.
Designed as a general-purpose AC/DC voltage tester for use in residential electrical systems, low-voltage control circuits, and standard commercial wiring up to CAT III 250V applications.
Installation and use of this tester should be performed by a licensed electrician or qualified technician following applicable NEC guidelines. Always verify the tester itself is functioning before and after each use by testing on a known live source. Insert the test leads into the built-in side holders when not in use to protect the probes. The ET40 requires two AAA batteries, which are not included; replace batteries promptly when the low-battery indicator activates to ensure accurate readings.
