The KENNAMETAL 7090542 is a CNMG-style indexable turning insert designed for precision metal cutting on CNC lathes and turning centers. Built from carbide substrate and coated with AlTiN (aluminum titanium nitride), this insert in grade KCU10B delivers thermal and wear resistance in demanding turning operations. The diamond-shaped insert body carries an 80-degree included angle, a neutral hand orientation, and four usable cutting edges per insert, making it a cost-effective choice for high-volume turning. Licensed machinists and CNC operators rely on this geometry for external and internal turning passes where insert life and surface finish consistency are priorities.
This insert is suited for turning applications in general machining, production shops, and tool rooms where CNMG toolholders are standard equipment. The MS chip breaker geometry is designed to promote controlled chip evacuation across a range of feed rates and depths of cut, reducing chip tangles during automated and semi-automated operations. Typical materials include steel and alloy steels where AlTiN coating provides oxidation resistance at elevated cutting temperatures. Installation requires a compatible CNMG insert seat and clamping system.
Designed as an OEM-specification replacement insert for use in CNMG-style insert seats and clamping toolholders that accept a 1/2 inch inscribed circle, 3/16 inch thick diamond turning insert with an N clearance and M tolerance designation.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC tooling technician following machine lockout/tagout procedures before accessing the turret or toolholder. Seat and clamp surfaces should be clean and free of chips before seating the insert. Use a calibrated torque wrench per the toolholder manufacturer's clamp screw specification when securing the insert. Inspect the cutting edge and chip breaker face for damage before engaging the workpiece.
