The KENNAMETAL 6969278 is a solid carbide milling insert manufactured to ISO code ONGX080630SNHB and ANSI code ONGX648SNHB, designed for use in indexable face and shoulder milling applications. This double-sided, octagon-shaped insert features 16 cutting edges and a negative rake geometry, maximizing tool life and cost-per-edge efficiency. The KCK20B grade incorporates a multilayer MTCVD coating system — TiCN, Al2O3, and TiOCN — that delivers wear resistance and thermal stability during interrupted and continuous cuts. Primary workpiece materials are cast iron and steel. The HB chip breaker geometry includes a chamfered and honed cutting edge style suited to stable cutting conditions. Installed by machinists and tooling technicians on CNC milling centers, this insert fits the Mill 16 cutter series.
This insert is rated for primary use in cast iron (K material code) and secondary use in steel (P material code), covering a broad range of production machining scenarios including automotive, die, and general engineering components. The ONGX series double-sided design allows the insert to be indexed multiple times before replacement, reducing downtime in high-volume milling operations. The neutral hand configuration makes it suitable for both climb and conventional milling setups where the cutter geometry permits. Compatible cutter series is Mill 16, and the insert is held in place by a screw-lock method standard to that platform.
Designed for use in the Kennametal Mill 16 cutter series. Insert style is ONGX; ISO code ONGX080630SNHB and ANSI code ONGX648SNHB. Inscribed circle range is 0.7000 to 1.0000 inches; length range is 0.7000 to 0.9000 inches; thickness range is 0.2200 to 0.2350 inches.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or tooling technicians on powered-down CNC or manual milling machines — confirm spindle lock and machine lockout before indexing or replacing inserts. Use the appropriate Torx or hex key as specified by the Mill 16 cutter body manufacturer for the insert clamping screw; do not overtighten the screw or use impact tooling. Inspect the insert pocket seat and clamping screw for wear or debris before seating a new insert. Follow the cutter body manufacturer's recommended starting speeds and feeds for the KCK20B grade when machining cast iron or steel.
