The KENNAMETAL 6687070 is a solid carbide turning insert with ANSI designation VBGT331LF and ISO designation VBGT160404LF, designed for precision metal-cutting operations on CNC and manual lathes. The insert features a 35-degree diamond (rhombic) shape, an AlTiN coating applied via PVD process, and a KCS10B manufacturer grade optimized for high wear-resistance across steel, stainless steel, cast iron, and non-ferrous workpiece materials. It carries a positive rake angle of 5 degrees, a honed cutting edge, and an LF chip breaker geometry engineered for finishing and light machining passes. Two cutting edges are available per insert, and it mounts via screw-on holding method.
This insert is suited for finishing and light machining applications including turning, facing, boring, back turning, and back boring. The KCS10B grade with AlTiN PVD coating makes it particularly effective when cutting stainless steel, superalloys, and titanium where wear-resistance and edge integrity are critical. It is installed by machinists and CNC tooling technicians in production and job-shop environments where consistent surface finish and tight tolerances are required.
Designed for use in screw-on style toolholders accepting VBGT-series inserts per ANSI and ISO standards. Compatible across primary workpiece material codes P, M, K, N, S, and H, covering steel, stainless steel, cast iron, aluminum and non-ferrous materials, and superalloys and titanium.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC tooling technician with the machine spindle fully stopped and locked out per facility lockout/tagout procedures. Seat the insert fully against the toolholder pocket and torque the clamping screw to the toolholder manufacturer specification before resuming any cutting operation. Inspect the cutting edge and chip breaker for damage before each use, and index or replace the insert at the first sign of wear to prevent workpiece damage or chatter.
